International Student Spring Conference 2011 - Trip Details

Travel:
To get to the island, we will be taking a boat which will leave from the San Pedro Catalina Express terminal. Travel arrangements to the terminal will be arranged by campus. You must be at the terminal no later than 5:30pm on Friday. We will return to the San Pedro terminal on Sunday by about 2:00pm.

There will be heavy traffic on Friday afternoon! Here are suggested times to leave your city, but final plans should be made the staff workers:

  • from Los Angeles area - 3:30p
  • from Orange County - 4pm
  • from San Diego - 2:30pm
  • from Fresno - 11:30am

Directions to San Pedro Terminal
Take the 110 South. Go towards Terminal Island – Long Beach. Exit Route 47, getting immediately in the right lane so you won’t cross the Vincent Thomas Bridge. Exit Harbor Boulevard. At the signal light, go straight, following the signs to the Catalina Express parking lot and terminal. Get a ticket from the parking kiosk and park as close as you can to the terminal in the designated parking lot. If you have any problems on the way there, please call your staff leader or me at (858) 232-6726. If you are lost, you can also call the terminal at (800) 316-8767.

Parking:
Two options: You can park at the terminal for $12 per 24-hour period,
or at a near-by church & have some drivers drop people off at the
terminal (Community Christian Church - 1903 W Summerland St, Rancho
Palos Verdes, CA 90275-1352 cccrpv.org). Please arrive about 45
minutes early if you park at the church. Carpooling is strongly
recommended. Please be sure to reimburse the driver for both parking
& gas – 4 people would be $8-12 per person for gas, & an additional $6
each for parking if you park at the terminal.

Phone Messages:
Campus By The Sea has pay phones for outgoing calls. However, if someone needs to get an important message to you, they can call 310-510-0015. Most cell phones do not work at camp.

Luggage:
Please clearly mark all your luggage with the letters "CBS" – printing on masking tape is fine. This is to ensure that any lost items will make their way to camp. You may want to keep valuables and anything you will need during the boat ride with you on the boat.

What to Bring:

  • Sleeping bag, or sheets and a blanket (Pillows will be provided for you) - To keep your bedding clean while we travel, pack it in a large plastic bag that is labeled with your name and campus
  • Warm clothing - Catalina is a desert island and temperatures can sometimes drop significantly, especially during mornings and evenings
  • Flashlight and fresh batteries - the bathroom and main facilities have electricity, but the rest of camp is unlit
  • Bible, pen and a journal or notebook - if you have these
  • Toiletries (shampoo, soap etc), towel (include an extra towel if you plan to go in the water)
  • Sandals/ flip-flops for the shower (recommended) and comfortable shoes – the camp is is rocky and dusty; bring something that can get dirty, and for hiking and basketball if you would like

What NOT to bring:
Please do not bring radios, CD or MP3 players, blow dryers, curling irons or other electrical items. These may overload the system. Contact lens equipment is fine.

If you have any additional questions, please ask the staff worker/ leader.
